Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth with the first of three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's enduring masterpiece. Set in Middle-earth 60 years before the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the adventure follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of dwarves on a journey into wild, treacherous lands swarming with beasts of every ilk. Although their goal lies to the East, they must first escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum. Alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo gains possession of Gollum's "precious" -- a simple, gold ring tied to the fate of all Middle-earth.
Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit enjoying his quiet life, is swept into an epic quest by Gandalf the Grey and thirteen dwarves who seek to reclaim their mountain home from Smaug, the dragon.

A Great TrilogyLet me First start off by saying I am going to write one big review for all three of these movies. I am doing this because I believe these movies not only should be view for their individual merits but as well as their merits as a collective whole. Just like The Lord of the Rings. I have to give Peter Jackson credit for attempting to do something different when it came to filming these movies. Although in the end it just hurt it. This is the HFR 48 frames per second. Something never done before in cinematic movie history. I happy for him trying. I believe that HFR will eventually make it more mainstream after 4K really takes hold. But I think he tried this to soon. People are just not quite ready for it and even if you view these movies in the stand 24 frame per second you can still sort of tell the difference. As for the story, it was not as good as the story telling in The Lord of the Rings. I feel this partly due to creative differences (which I will talk a little more below in the individual reviews) as well as other issue that happened during the filming of these movies, as Peter Jackson was not originally going to be the one doing them. But still overall I love this movie series and I sad to see that (almost) Middle earth is now done. An Unexpected Journey: This movie was a great start to the series. The biggest down side to this film was actually on the production side for me. The affect of the HFR was to strong in this film and also there were some other small nit picks like the few shots that were done with a GoPro camera that kind of stick out. But this film I definitely loved. The story was great and I loved how it tied in The Lord of the Rings at the Beginning. The Desolation of Smaug: With this movie Peter Jackson definitely worked hard to fix the “production side” issues that I had (and probably others) with the first film. The HFR affect was definitely less noticeable and definitely less soap opera. The story continued to be great and definitely develop. But here is one of those creative differences that I believe kind of started to hurt the story and that was the inclusion of Legolas. I understand that the writers and Peter Jackson wanted to make a connection between the movies but I think that they should have stuck to the characters that were in the book. The Battle of the Five Armies: An epic 45 minute battle between Orcs, Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and Eagles(?) and the Destruction of Smaug. And that begging part when Smaug is killed is sort of one of the movie moments where you wonder why it was not included in the movie named “The Desolation of Smaug”. Because honestly it could have been moved over and it this movie still would have fine and would have given a more fitting end to the 2nd movie. But aside from that this movie was awesome. I know out of the three it seem that it has the lowest rating and that is probably due to the overall lack of story in this film. And the biggest reason for that is in the books, the battle of the five armies is told after the battle is over, and only consist of a chapter. But over all I still love this movie. As a whole the series is great and definitely part of my movie Collection. It was not Peter Jackson’s greatest work but still an amazing series and I will sad to see middle earth go..Score: 5/5

Fly, you fools! This movie is a complete and utter letdown. I had assumed that it would actually be true to the book (seeing as Jackson's other LOTR movies only seemed to leave things out because he didn't have enough time). I thought SURELY with 3 movies "They can't possibly screw this up right?" Wrong. So wrong. So much was added that it wasn't even the same story. This is a fanfiction taken to a whole new ridiculous level. Between the white Orc and the comical "Well that'll do it" by the goblin king just before he dies this movie is a massive disappointment. Great Movie and TrilogyI loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I actually like The Hobbit trilogy even more. All three movies are great, and love seeing the story of Bilbo Baggins and Gandolph on the big screen. Martin Freeman (Sherlock) is fantastic as Bilbo, Aidan Turner (Poldark) is also amazing as Kili as well as Richard Armitage as Thorin. Sir Ian McKellen as Gandolph is a homerun, he is truly an amazing actor. I would highly recommend these movies..Score: 5/5
