"A woman playing a woman. Where's the trick in that?"- Welcome to the 17th century stage, where Ned Kynaston's (Billy Crudup) performance of Desdemona in Shakespeare's Othello brings the house down nightly. Ned is the "most beautiful woman on the London stage." That is, until the King renounces the royal edict that only men can play women on stage. Enter Maria (Claire Danes), Ned's seemingly loyal dresser, who becomes an instant star, leaving Ned to suppress his ardent feminine traits and make a man of himself.
Humble Maria, who outfits top London theater star Ned Kynaston, takes none of the credit for the male actor's success at playing women. And because this is the 17th century, Maria, like other females, is prohibited from pursuing her dream of acting. But when powerful people support her, King Charles II lifts the ban on female stage performers. And just as Maria aided Ned, she needs his help to learn her new profession.

This movie was terribleI usually love little chick flicks, but this one put it past the line. I would not recommend this to anyone at all. The directer should be ashamed of what he put in the making. I wasted 10 bucks that I worked for at the grocery store. Repulsive..Score: 1/5
Get over itThis movie is SUPPOSED to make you feel uncomfortable! so get over it. this is a great movie. it is a great acting lesson, especially at the end. it marks a period in theater that is a transition from the intulectual actor, with "learned" gestures, to the emotional actor, who plays what they know and puts real life on the stage..Score: 5/5
ExcellentThis was an excellent movie. The acting was superb and the passion between these two made it come alive. I very much enjoyed it and wouldn't actually compare it to shakespeare in love, this felt like a totally different film to me. Enjoy!.Score: 5/5

Stage BeautyThis is a fun, fine film with a more complex plot than it's cousin, Shakespeare in Love. It travels beyond a romantic love story and the longing of a woman wanting to act, in a time the profession was forbidden her, and explores what happens to a man who has spent his entire life portraying women. When the rules are suddenly shifted and women are at last allowed to at least attempt to portray themselves on stage, can this star of his changing Age bear to embrace playing a man after he has honed his gentle sex artiface for a lifetime? Can the woman, who has no other role model other than a man to teach her how to portray a woman on stage, succeed with such an imitation? Is gender the ruler of one's fate? Are both characters not entitled to all of their talents and gifts? The film touches on the birth of realistic acting in theater to great effect and pokes fun at it at the same time. The entire cast is excellent and Clare Danes is, as always, a revelation..Score: 4/5
Hit or MissThis is really a love it or hate it type of movie. I loved it but if gender bending and confused male sexuality makes you uncomfortable than this is not the film for you. It is a role reversal of Shakespear In Love making you see the world of an outed actor from a male point of veiw (sort of), In general you feel for the characters and it is overall enjoyable..Score: 3/5
Absolutely brilliantStage Beauty is everything Shakespeare in Love wanted to be. Stage Beauty is a dark comedy that looks into the meaning behind gender roles and how they are translated in our society. The script is tight and smart and the actors are all excellent. Do not miss this film if you are at all interested in the future of great cinema..Score: 5/5

A more introspective shakespeare in loveWith all the glamour and beauty of Shakespeare in Love, Stage Beauty takes it's story a step further to explore the human psyche in relation to gender identity. An amazing film with awesome chemistry between the leads (i think this was the set Claire Danes and Billy Crudup started dating on), a great storyline and gorgeous set/costume designs.
