"Runnin' Down A Dream," a film directed by cinema legend Peter Bogdanovich, is the story of one of America's great rock and roll bands told as never before. Tracking Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from their Gainesville beginnings to their 30th anniversary celebration, "Runnin' Down A Dream" is the hard-hitting account of a band that became a family and, along the way, left a body of work that is among the richest deposits in American musical history.
Directed by Peter Bogdanovich and packed with rare concert footage and home movies, this documentary explores the history of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, including Petty's famous collaborations and notorious clashes with the record industry. Interviews with musical luminaries including Jackson Browne, George Harrison, Eddie Vedder, Roger McGuinn, Jeff Lynne, Dave Stewart and Petty himself shed some revelatory vision.

Fantastic!My favorite Music Documentary now! This is extremely well done. Never lags for a minute. It is so good I think it could very well have inspired the wonderful subsequent Mudcrutch revival and the last two great Heartbreakers albums. Tom Petty was the real deal..Score: 5/5
Excellent!While I have always been a Tom Petty fan, I am not a fan of rockumentaries. I also do not sit to watch four hours of anything . . .but when this started on the Sundance channel one day, I could NOT stop watching it! It was completely engaging. Best music documentary I have ever seenSimply put, this is the most entertaining and engaging musical documentary I have evern seen (and I've seen many of them). You would think at four hours, it would drag, but it never did, and watching over a period of days, I couldn't wait until I could view the next segment. I love Scorcese's "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan" and think its masterful, but it only covered a particular time period in Dylan's career, whereas this gives you the skinny on the whole Petty career, good, bad and otherwise. It is not just for Petty diehards, either, as it appeals to anyone who can appreciate an artist's work and creative journey. You might find yourself downloading many Petty tunes, however, after seeing this movie. Be warned! Get this...You won't regret it at all and it's a bargain price considering the content..Score: 5/5

Absorbing Film, Great MusicWe watched the film over two nights, having started late the first night. We wanted to stay up to finish it the first night, but at age 70, that was too hard. We had seen him twice in concert years ago - once when he played with Dylan. The film draws you into his life with his band and the other musicians who joined him and presents an aboslutely remarkable portrait of him, though I thought it underplayed his addiction and the danger that had. Still, I was left for a new appreciation for Tom Petty as a man and as a musician. This is a "must see" film..Score: 5/5

Still not a big fanI like some of Pettyâs songs. I just find him as a person very uncool. He never strikes me as a rock star, more of a gardener or a parts guy at a Chrysler dealership. What I found ironic is that my favourite song by him is âjamming meâ but he hated that album. More than anything, Tom, please get a new hair style. The long straight hair just doesnât do it for you.
