At the end of World War II, Fred Derry (Dana Andrews), Al Stevenson (Fredric March) and Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) return home to Boone City. Fred was a decorated captain in the Army Air Forces in Europe, Al a sergeant in the Army who saw action in the Pacific, and Homer a sailor who served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Homer's ship was sunk, killing many of his fellow sailors; his arms were burned off below the elbow and he now uses metal hook prostheses. The three men share first a plane trip then a cab ride and become friends. Fred eventually finds work when he convinces a foreman who is also a veteran that he can learn new skills just as he learned to be a bombardier. He also finds love in the form of Peggy Stephenson. Al and Milly are opposed at first, but when Fred's marriage finally ends, they become supportive. The movie ends with the Stephenson family, Homer and Wilma, and Fred and Peggy all facing challenging but nonetheless bright futures.
It's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to become a nightmare.

A refreshing cinematic experience! It's not often that I can say that I watched a truly pleasurable movie where the characters appeared genuine and altruistic. As a veteran I felt that the director and actors valued America's veterans for their sacrifice and service to their country. Thank you..Score: 5/5
This Movie is on my top 4 favorite movies! From start to finish, it is one of my favorite films of all times! After watching it you will see why it won all of the awards that it did! In my Top 10This movie stands the test of time. Not only does it accurately show men and women coming home from war, but it shows the dynamics of the family readjusting to that homecoming. This is by far one of the best movies to date and deserves more awards than it got..Score: 5/5
Six starsIt's a black and white war movie from a time when Hollywood was ripe with tripe. What's not to hate? Everything. It's ridiculous to say TBYOOL is the greatest movie ever made because that pool (though small) is populated with many equals. But there is no equal. Essentially, this is a story of "us." How this film captures the ethos of what it means to be an American (well into the 21st Century) is pure voodoo. The characters are refreshingly real (no Hollyweird schmaltz) and the storyline of ex-Warriors attempting to find their place in a new world is as contemprary as today. My favorite scene—Dana Andrews' character realizing that the past is the past and figuring out how to make his current reality "work"...via the cast-off jeer of a job foreman tasked with destroying the only success he had. Like 2001, the first Star Wars V, Dr. Strangelove, The Godfather, Shawshank Remption...TBYOOL has the stuff..Score: 5/5
ExcellentA nice time capsule of America after WWII. The fashions, popular slang, the music and most impressive, the attitudes of those who did not go overseas. Briefly it is (accuraly) eluded to that Communism was the greater threat, but (sadly) the conversation is quelled so quickly you scarcely notice or connect what is being said. All in all it is a pleasure to watch and a joy to look briefly into the world I was born into in 1952..Score: 5/5

Timeless classicThe blurb on iTunes aout this movie doesn't do it justice. This is a movie, made shortly after the end of WWII, that tackles serious issues related to men coming home from war and the impact on the homefront when they return. It is ahead of its time touching on disability, PTSD, re-integrating into society after life-changing experiences that no one at home can understand and more. Women went to work, earning their own money and discovering what they could do if they had the chance. Husbands and wives, separated for years, have to reconnect and can't always. Men who were given incredible responsibility in their wartime roles, come home to the jobs they left that are far below their abilities but they are left without training to do anything else in civilian life. Or they come home with injuries that change everything about their day-to-day life. There are many themes here that I am sure resonate with today's military personnel and their families and despite it being 70 years old, the film's honesty and depth make it timeless. The performances are exceptional and Harold Russell, who plays the disabled Homer and was a veteran and not a professional actor, won a supporting actor Oscar as well as an honorary Oscar for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans. Definitely worth watching this one!.Score: 5/5
