Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman writes, produces and makes his directorial debut with this timeless supernatural fantasy based on Mark Helprin's best-selling novel. Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, it is a story of miracles, crossed destinies and the age-old battle between good and evil. Colin Farrell plays a turn-of-the-century Irish thief who encounters a terminally ill heiress while robbing her house. Falling irrevocably in love with her, his only option is to discover a way to stop time and bring her back from death. In addition to the sweeping, romantic story, Akiva Goldsman's passion project features a remarkable roster of acting talent including Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay and Oscar® winners Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint and Russell Crowe.
This is not a true story. This is true love.. A burglar falls for an heiress as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her.. Winter's Tale Wiki
I really enjoyed this movie last night at home. It was really good. I kind of cried. I loved Winter's tale so much. :)
I thought it was a beautiful and magical story.
If you're close-minded, short-sighted, this movie isn't for you. If you don't believe there's anything after this life or if you feel this life is all about you, watch this movie and learn to look at life from a different perspective. Furthermore, art is about interpretation, not always about the pretty squares, circles and colors or lack thereof. The point behind the story is that our lives, and all life, have meaning, or several meanings, and that we are not just here to fulfill our dreams and desires, but that possibly, our existence can somehow be a part of a stranger's blessing. The story faintly touches on the complexity of human life, our search for purpose in this world and our innermost hope that there has to be something more than this life here on earth. This story is about different people in different times being linked together in the universe seemingly by supernatural benevolent forces. The story shows you one character who remains in love with life despite a life threatening illness. Another character seems to be surrounded by tragedy and bad fortune until being blessed with love and later performs a selfless act that will ultimately tie all of the characters' destinies together in victorious ending for the forces of good. Good will always triumph over evil, and hope lives in the unlikeliest of places. There is also another main character worth mentioning who happens to be a beautiful horse, man’s best friend and protector in the story. All life is precious, and animals remain man’s best friend and are blessings in it of themselves. The reason for our existence then according to the story, is not just to survive or to experience every single thing we can imagine. Our existence, in this story, is all about quality not quantity, selflessness, connection to others, and love. The evil characterized in this story: misleads people into thinking only of the here and now, seems to never sleep in its chase to perform evil, works diligently to thwart people away from their true paths, and has no respect for life (...and is Will Smith??). The good characterized in this story on the other hand: are regular everyday people, have selfless qualities, extend their love and kindness to others freely and without expecting anything in return, don’t blame or hate because of their circumstances, hope in a life hereafter, look evil in the face and fight back, love and respect animals, are beat up by life but eventually move on to their next phase in life in the heavens and live there happily ever after. Great story, I recommend you watch and change how you view your life and the life of others.
A lovely, sweet movie. Ended up watching it multiple times.
I honestly fell in love with this movie from the first time I saw it. It is truly a beautiful film to watch
When the trailer arrived for "Winter's Tale," I believed it would be a phenomenal film and an amazing start to the year. Little did I know that I would be one of the most disappointing movies I had ever seen, despite the promising love story, star-studded cast, and acclaimed screenwriter Akiva Goldsman acting as both writer and director. There were many, many issues with "Winter's Tale," the film adaptation of the novel by Mark Helprin, but the best way to put it is that the 100% focus on the "look" of the film sent it straight into a death trap with lousy writing and a terrible sense of pace. A few scenes of strong acting and wonderful cinematography were the only positive aspects I could recall after it was over. The film follows the story of Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a thief living in early twentieth century New York City. While robbing a luxurious mansion he meets and befriends Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), a wealthy young heiress dying of consumption. While Peter works to impress Beverly's doting father Isaac (William Hurt) as he finds himself falling in love, villainous gangster Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), Peter's former mentor and nemesis, works to destroy him once and for all. In an effort to save Beverly's life, Peter looks for a miracle in a century-long quest for true love and prepares to fight Pearly in a battle of good versus evil. As far as story issues, the second half of "Winter's Tale" could have been completely written out as it made almost no sense at all, particularly its bizarre, cliffhanger conclusion. Multiple characters had zero depth and could have been easily erased from the already confusing plot, which was full of social and religious analogies that just didn't fit the romance and drama of the tale. Because of the frequent interruptions from the main storyline the intense hatred in Peter and Pearly's relationship was barely explored, the intriguing romance between Peter and Beverly only scratched the surface of its full potential, and anything interesting about Peter's humble origins was ultimately left untouched. The only aspect of the film I genuinely enjoyed was its main cast, who did what little it could with the script to make the characters likable. Colin Farrell gave a favorable performance as the story's hero Peter Lake and made the 360-degree turn from the first to the second half a little easier to bear. Russell Crowe gave a generally good performance as the villainous Pearly Soames (despite his character being involved in most of the incomprehensible scenes), as did William Hurt as the cautious, kindhearted Isaac Penn. But it was Jessica Brown Findlay who stole the show as Beverly, a likable, tragic figure who gave the story an early positive boost. When Beverly departed, so did what little could have worked with the plot. That said, actors with strong roles later on in the story such as Jennifer Connelly and Eva Marie Saint could barely make up for the script's lack of cohesion and sense; it had nothing to do with their performances, but their characters could have been written out entirely. The same could be said for Will Smith, whose brief appearance as Lucifer could have been scrapped with no damage and actually made the story simpler to follow. I wish I could say better about "Winter's Tale," a film I had really wanted to see based on its fantastic trailers, but this movie failed to deliver, plain and simple. If you're not a fan of Helprin's novel or any of the movie's A-list actors, this film is far better off as a rental.
I bought this one and I'm glad I did. Beautiful cast and scenery!! Superb acting!! Lovely, romantic, old fashioned fairy tale!! I have nothing bad to say about it, and those who do don't know what they're talking about. Five stars all the way!!
The critics may have hated it. But I gather that they tend to be a bit full of themselves anyway. Suspend disbelief and just enjoy it with openness. I thought it was wonderful
This is a gorgeous epic love story......stunning imagery, fantastic cast, and great story......set in a beautiful, magical, snowy NYC. It is sad, wonderous, mesmerizing.......about lost love. Colin Farrell is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood.....his broken heart is so real.....you feel his pain. Russell Crowe has never been more menacing....add the white horse to the cast of amazing performers. Highly recommend Winter's Tale on a cold snowy winter's night.....
I know many did not enjoy this film, but my husband and I found the story line to be romantic and filled with innocence and hope. I do recommend this for those viewers who want to see a film that leaves you with the feeling that there is always hope, always a new day, and can rest in the possibility of a miracle around the bend.
I originally watched it despite Rotten Tomatoes' terrible reviews. It proved to be a wonderful movie! So amazing so I've watched several times since. If you are a romantic, you'll love this!
like the other reviewers who liked it, i have NO IDEA why the critics panned this film- i thought it was AMAZING!!- if you liked the princess bride way back when, they you will definitely like this one- it was a wonderful journey through magic- sweet, well-acted, heartbreaking and beautiful-
Loved the film so much that we watched it twice over a weekend.
Great movie that tells a tale about good, evil, hope and how we are all connected. Critics need to give their heads a shake..

This was better than we expected, and worth renting!
Je n'écoutes pas souvent de films mais celui-ci m'a tout de suite accrochée par la beauté de l'histoire et bien sur les miracles et symboles qui s'y retrouvent.
Not sure where the bad reviews come from, I thought it an alright movie, girlfriend loved it ;)
Just watched. Loved it. Downloaded the soundtrack, book and movie!!
That is an amazing movie about love , good and evil . If the critics couldn’t see how good this movie is , I just sad for them !
