HBO Makes TV HistoryHBO has done the impossible. Game of Thrones is arguably the most ambitious, lavish, & audacious production ever created for TV, only having its predecessor, Rome, for comparison. With one of the most expensive budgets in TV history, it has created a world of unmatched size & scope. In order to create its breathtaking universe, production includes filming in 6 countries spanning 3 continents, & boasts an Oscar worthy script, soundtrack, visual effects, art direction, cinematography, & costume design. With stellar cinematic photography & sets, it is anything but standard TV fare. Due to its enormity, endless imagination, outstanding lead cast & an ensemble of hundreds, this fantasy has warranted comparisons to LOTR. However the content of the show is anything but the cliches that we have become accustomed to in fantasy. The show is best described as a never ending struggle for power among rival players from all ends of society who, instead of being clearly good or evil, fall into a broad spectrum of ethical ambiguity. The show explores a wide range of real world issues including Machiavellian politics, human sexuality, social hierarchies, crime & punishment, religion in government, political corruption, civil war, struggles & afflictions of the ostracized, & the affirmation of women. Remarkably, the series covers them all. It can do this because it is based upon the landmark fantasy book series "A Song of Ice & Fire". With the books as its source, the show adapts much of its rich materiel with few deviations. In the end, the results are some of the most amazing & spectacular sequences ever shot for a fictional television series & losing yourself in this fantasy becomes effortless. There are moments that will make one gasp in awe, scenes that fill one with wonder & joy, & shocking images that will cause anguish & heartache. The show holds nothing back. If I could watch only 1 show, this is itI got an ARC of the 1st book, took me 2 years to get round to it. I had the 2nd bk by then, gobbled them both in 3 days! Agony is waiting for the other books! I told my husband to read, but he got to the kids and put it down, said he hated kids in syfy. Now when we watch, he begs me to tell what happens next, haha! I love his reactions to plot twists! Now that the show has pretty much caught up to the last book, I sit on my hands waiting for the next season.
While the nudity and sex is at times excessive, one becomes jaded to it. Many men have told me they see so much of it on tv, they get to a point where they would rather not see it in the show. At times it is a necessary plot device. I have noticed the later seasons have toned it down a bit. That said, this is an amazing, exciting, addictive series, and well worth watching. Phenomenal Show!This show is an achievement is so many ways! From character development to plot line and so on... Game of Thrones delivers heavy! The acting is incredible, the story is VERY true to the books (which is sadly such a rarity when it comes to this genre), and I find every episode leaving me wanting more! Series Premiere. A Night's Watch deserter is tracked down outside of Winterfell, prompting swift justice from Lord Eddard 'Ned' Stark, and raising concerns about the dangers in the lawless lands north of the Wall. Robert arrives at Winterfell with his wife, Queen Cersei, and other members of the Lannister family: her twin brother Jaime, dwarf brother Tyrion, and Cersei's son and heir to the throne, 12-year-old Joffrey. Unable to refuse his old friend and king, Ned prepares to leave for King's Landing, as Jon Snow decides to travel north to Black Castle to join the Night's Watch, accompanied by a curious Tyrion. But a startling act of treachery directed at young Bran may end up postponing their respective departures.
Bran's fate remains in doubt. Having agreed to become the King's Hand, Ned leaves The North with daughters Sansa and Arya, while Catelyn stays behind to tend to Bran. Jon Snow heads north to join the brotherhood of the Night's Watch. Tyrion decides to forgo the trip south with his family, instead joining Jon in the entourage heading to the Wall. Viserys bides his time in hopes of winning back the throne, while Dany focuses her attention on learning how to please her new husband, Drogo.
Arriving at King's Landing after his long journey, Ned is shocked to learn of the Crown's profligacy from his new advisors. At Castle Black, Jon Snow impresses Tyrion at the expense of greener recruits. Suspicious the Lannisters had a hand in Bran's fall, Catelyn covertly follows her husband to King's Landing, where she is intercepted by Petyr Baelish, a.k.a. 'Littlefinger,' a shrewd longtime ally and brothel owner. Cersei and Jaime ponder the implications of Bran's recovery; Arya studies swordsmanship. On the road to Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys finds herself at odds with Viserys.
Ned looks to a book for clues to the death of his predecessor, and uncovers one of King Robert's bastards. Robert and his guests witness a tournament honoring Ned. Jon takes measures to protect Sam from further abuse at Castle Black; a frustrated Viserys clashes with Daenerys in Vaes Dothrak; Sansa imagines her future as a queen, while Arya envisions a far different future. Catelyn rallies her husband's allies to make a point, while Tyrion finds himself caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Incensed over news of Daenerys' alliance with the Dothrakis, Robert orders a pre-emptive strike on the Targaryens that drives a wedge in his relationship with Ned. A captive Tyrion helps Catelyn, but receives a cold reception at the Eyrie from her sister, John Arryn's widow Lysa. Sansa is charmed by the dashing Ser Loras Tyrell, a.k.a. the Knight of Flowers. Arya overhears a plot against her father.
Reinstated as the Hand, Ned sits for the King while Robert is on a hunt. Ned issues a decree that could have long-term consequences throughout the Seven Kingdoms. At the Eyrie, Tyrion confesses to his 'crimes,' and demands that Lysa give him a trial by combat. Joffrey apologizes to Sansa; Viserys receives from Drogo his final payment for Daenerys.
Explaining that the future of the Lannisters is at stake, Tywin presses Jaime to 'be the man you were meant to be' as they prepare for battle. Ned confronts Cersei about the secrets that killed Jon Arryn. With the fate of the missing Benjen very much on his mind, Jon takes his Night's Watch vows, though not with the assignment he coveted. After Ser Jorah saves Daenerys from treachery, an enraged Drogo vows to lead the Dothraki where they've never gone before. An injured Robert takes pains to ensure an orderly transition at King's Landing.
In the aftermath of Ned's capture, Syrio and Arya face off against Lannister guards while Cersei manipulates Sansa to her own ends. Robb rallies his fathers northern allies against Tywin Lannister and heads south to war. Tyrion forms an uneasy alliance with the hill tribes and reunites with his father. Jon lashes out at Thorne and battles a mysterious attacker from beyond the Wall. Dany is forced to reconcile her desire to conquer Westeros with Drogos savagery after the Dothraki raid a peaceful village.
With Sansas life in danger, Ned makes a fateful decision. Catelyn brokers an unsavory deal with the slippery Walder Frey. Tyrion acquires a mistress and is forced by his father to fight on the front lines. Robb wins his first major victory and captures a prized prisoner.
