I Believe A Man Can Fly! by James Lockrow - March 12, 2011Much like Hill Street Blues set the bar for the tv police shows to come, Superman: The Movie opened the door for all of the big screen films and tv shows based on comic books and superheroes to follow (for good or for bad). I am definitely biased. Once June 1938 appeared and the curtains opened I was curious. Once John Williams' music reached a crescendo, the shield blazed and the credits began to fly, I was hooked and have been ever since. Mario Puzo wrote a great allegory. Richard Donner lovingly directed a great movie. John Williams composed and conducted an awesome, iconic score. The cast of both stars and newcomers brought these familiar characters to life. Many people concentrate on Act 3 (Metropolis) because of the appearance of Superman. I do enjoy Act 3 very much, particularly Reeve's Clark Kent and Hackman's Lex Luthor, but I think I get the greatest joy from Acts 1 (Krypton) and 2 (Smallville). While the moments on Krypton are good (and particularly touching when Jor-El says goodbye to his only son), I find the scenes of Clark as a boy with Jonathan and Martha the most heartfelt. I love Jonathan and Martha's exchange when they find Clark. I love Jonathan's talk with Clark about "showing off." I despair at Jonathan's death and Clark's frustration and regret. My heart breaks every time I see Martha, noticeably aged, looking out that screen door and seeing Clark standing in the field, knowing that the time she and Jonathan had dreaded has finally arrived. Their conversation in the field may (only to critics) be in a superhero movie but to any parent who has had to let a child go out on their own, it is universal and powerful. I may be biased and I may need help, but I feel Richard Donner is underrated as a director and, even thought it is comic-based, I feel Superman: The Movie is underrated as a film. P.S. The Donner cut of Superman II is the quintessential version..Score: 5/5
