The greatest adventure of all time begins with Star Trek, the incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before.

Very DisappointingAs a Star Trek fanatic I was thrilled at the prospect of a new movie, but I have to be honest and say that I was more than a bit disappointed. Even if you factor in the fact (spoiler alert) that the new movie's set in an "alternate timeline," there's just not the magic and chemistry the original franchise had. For me the team took way too many artistic liberties in creating their version, and it severely damaged the movie. Was one of those situations where I genuinely wanted to like the movie...........unfortunately I can't honestly say I did..Score: 2/5
Terrible, would give it 0 stars.Life long admirer of Star Trek. Loved all the series and the films. It is in my DNA. Star Trek has raised me and been an important influence on my life. But this incarnation is unbearable. The humor is weak, the characters are incompetent and shallow imitations and the story is nonsense, as if twelve year olds wrote it. Overall an immature rendition with no important take away themes to walk away from. I can go on but I’ve said enough. I’ve tried liking this film multiple times but its just not for me. Every scene is cringe worthy..Score: 1/5
Amazing!!!At first I was skeptical about the remake of another classic. And then I watched the film. It took my breath away! JJ Abrams was born to make Sci-Fi. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto do standout jobs as Kirk and Spock, enough to make Shatner and Nimoy (RIP) proud. But the best part was bringing Nimoy back and making his appearance not just a cameo, but an essential area of the film. Probably the best film of 2009.Score: 5/5

He boldly went thereA long time ago, in a… wait, wrong JJ Abrams movie. This is the JJ Abrams movie that gave me faith in his ability to handle the other star franchise (whose name I will not mention to avoid wars). Star Trek opens with a simple logos set to the simple yet powerful sound of a horn giving off the main theme, followed by silent awe for the Starship Kelvin, encountering a lightning storm in space. Out of the storm emerges a more intimidating Spaceball One that disables the Kelvin. After that, Nero (Eric Bana) of Romulus demands a meeting with Captain Faran Tahir (Richard Robau), who makes first mate George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) captain before entering the mystery ship by shuttle. Long story short, Captain Tahir is murdered, Romulans open fire, and on Medical Shuttle 37, George’s wife Winona (Jennifer Morrison) gives birth to their son, who they name James Tiberius Kirk while George guides the Kelvin into the Romulan ship, and dies without ever seeing or meeting his son. After this powerful opening, we get the title set to Michael Giacchino's amazing score, and catch up on James as a kid, after which we meet a Human-Vulcan named Spock, who we see bullied for his mixed ancestry, and after a time jump, we reunite with Spock (Zachary Quinto) turning down an acceptance to a Vulcan college, opting for Starfleet instead, to be the first Vulcan in Starfleet, and not taint their record with his human ancestry, an important part of him that comes into play throughout. After this, we reunite with adult Kirk (Chris Pine), who after hitting on Starfleet Cadet Uhura (Zoe Saldana), gets into a bar fight that’s broken up by Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), who realizes who Kirk is, and gets him to enlist in Starfleet to boldly go where his father has gone before. After making a friend in Dr. Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban), fast-forward three years, and during an academic hearing, the cadets of Starfleet Academy are called in to answer a distress call from Vulcan, Spock’s homeworld (on his dad’s side). What follows is an origin story for a new timeline in the Star Trek universe, which develops and explores mostly Kirk and Spock as the first act would suggest, but to old fans, the other characters aren’t shelved entirely. All of the time-travel that comes up is easily explained, allowing you to focus on the story of good vs. evil that Star Trek doesn’t force, but makes work as a reboot of one of the most iconic TV shows in history (Quick fun fact: Star Trek was the only show Martin Luther King Jr. let his kids stay up to watch, as he told Nichelle Nichols). While the CGI was gorgeous and used where you could tell, but it felt natural, I must say JJ has a serious flare for making lens flares glaringly visible where there really shouldn’t have been any. You might think “cool,” but it gets excessive beyond reason. Thank God he didn’t use it in the other franchise (excessively). Michael Giacchino (as previously states) did a great job with the score. I’m no music guy, but he just made it work everywhere. Now, all I have left to say is this: Star Trek: one of the most iconic sci-fi franchises of all time. This movie is an amazing addition to its library, and a great way to reintroduce it to a new generation, while keeping the respect of old fans. Its mission: to explore strange familiar worlds; to seek out old friends and change the timeline; to boldly go where no other franchise has gone before (A natural reboot that explains why things are different without wasting our time with ultra-long monologues)!.Score: 5/5
