A deeply personal portrait of 20th Century American childhood, Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans is a coming-of-age story about a young man's discovery of a shattering family secret and an exploration of the power of movies to help us see the truth about each other and ourselves. Inspired by Spielberg's own childhood, The Fabelmans is written by Spielberg and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America, Caroline, or Change), who has earned Oscar nominations for his screenplays for Spielberg's Lincoln and Munich. The film is produced by three-time Oscar® nominee Kristie Macosko Krieger (West Side Story, The Post), Spielberg and Kushner.
Growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.

Spielberg’s Origin Story Hits HomeI’ve been obsessed with films since I was very small and throughout my life, Steven Spielberg has always been my guy. Ever since I saw ET for the first time, my mind has been fully wired in the art of cinema. The way I saw so much of myself in his new film, The Fabelmans, almost pained me. The moment of ignition, the fuse of artistic imagination expressed through time and wisdom. A passion of film that reaches a certain point where it’s all you can think of, all you can dream of. All consuming, yet withdrawn from those around you. I am not Steven Spielberg and will never be Steven Spielberg, but knowing his origins mirrored my own (wanting to recreate what I loved with a camera of my own, wanting to create art for others, etc) gives me a sense of wholeness. A childhood hero of mine reaching deeply into my soul, just to whisper “you have value”. I felt seen and heard in ways I hadn’t by a film in ages and seeing it again only solidified my thoughts. Spielberg’s origin story hits so close to home and I am incredibly thankful for him to have shared it with his longtime fans. “In this family, it's the scientists versus the artists. Sammy's on my side; he takes after me.”.Score: 5/5
Hot messMovie is boring, depressing, and uninspiring. Way too much time on the divorce storyline and rest jumps all over the place. Just when it’s about to get to the part the audience cares about the credits roll. Only reason ppl are giving this a good rating is because of a name..Score: 1/5

VisionaryIs this Spielbergs best? No. Is it his most personal? Most definitely. I left in awe of his dedication to his art and how truly brilliant he is at what he does. What amazed me the most, though, and what made me love this movie, is that in showing us his brilliance and talent he also lets us see his flaws and the flaws of his family. One of the year’s best filmsSteven Spielberg has done it again with a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story loosely based on his adolescence. In it, we witness 16 year old Sammy Fabelman (played by a perfectly cast Gabriel LaBelle in a performance that will define his career) navigate his way through many challenges some of us may have faced in our lives, such as parental divorce, school bullying, among other things, in order to achieve his goal of becoming a filmmaker. Gabriel’s portrayal of the character shows raw emotion that makes you end up relating to and sympathizing with him through many of the scenes he’s in, and yep, you bet Sammy rules in the parts where he is filming with his camera and making his movies. This story, brought to life through a screenplay co-written by Spielberg and Tony Kushner, literally speaks to you and resonates with anyone of any age who aspires to be an artist in any field. The rest of the performances are terrific, with Michelle Williams as Sammy's mother Mitzi being a major standout, same with Paul Dano as Sammy's father Burt, and Judd Hirsch, who gives a memorable monologue as Sammy's great uncle Boris. These 4 performances deserve tons of award nominations. The cinematography is beautiful, as we can all expect from the great Janusz Kaminski. John Williams' score, while a bit more subdued and minimalist this time due to it being mostly driven by piano, suits the film's uplifting tone, no matter what people think of it. The pacing at times can feel slow or fast, but that does not matter, as in the end, we must always trust Spielberg to give us such a powerful and uplifting story we all need right now. Highly reccomended..Score: 5/5

So disappointingWhat should have been one of Spielberg’s richest films, sadly is an uninvolving melodrama. There are good moments and fine performances, but it never manages to pull the viewer in.
