Robert Redford directs this absolutely delightful comedy of everyday people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. When a Chicano handyman from the Milagro Valley decides to irrigate his small beanfield by "borrowing" some water from a large and potentially destructive site, he unknowingly sets off a chain reaction that erupts into a humorous culture clash. The developers then try to stamp out the modest plantings, forcing the handyman's friends to team up with the spirited "rebel" to protect and preserve their way of life.
The accidental breakdown of an irrigation valve launches a hot confrontation between the mainly Latino farmers in a tiny New Mexico town and the real estate developers and politicians determined to acquire their land for a golf resort.

A light hearted treatment of the novelAn engaging film with a good cast. The movie is more light hearted than the novel, a part of John Nichols New Mexico trilogy. The novel was not dark but the movie is well done and faithful to the central characters. Redford captures the local flavor with gentle wit and a well cast group of actors. A most enjoyable story..Score: 4/5
You Will Regret Watching ThisThis was probably, nay, DEFINITELY the single most boring experience of my life. I had to sit through this atrocity in high school. Normally, I give each film a fair chance and this one was no different. I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for something to grab my attention and make me even vaguely interested in the story but it never came. This movie was so bad I literally felt sick to my stomach and question whether or not I wanted to continue to exist (to be fair, I was in high school so I was dealing with some other stuff too but that gawdawful movie did not help at all). Please, as a favor to yourself and to your loved ones, don't ever buy, rent, or view this movie because you will run the risk of being overwhelmed with the heaping amount of fail that this "film"is full of. Shame on Mr. Redford for making this. Oh and if you think I simply didn't get plot, bear in mind that I live in a formerly rural town that is quickly being urbanized and I'm VERY well aware of the kind of struggles there are when disputes over land for agricultural uses arise. But I still really, really hate the movie..Score: 1/5

Not everyone will "get" this movie, but...... but for those that grew up in NM/Southern Colorado - the movie is simply wonderful. I am a native New Mexican, Hispanic, and boy do I get this movie..... Land grants, water rights, Catholic devotion with a twist of that which can not be explained. I don't know where to start to describe the scenery. Most of the film was shot in Truchas, NM where my mom was raised. I find it to be a treasure to have this amazing northern NM town preserved on film to show my kids one day. The Melanie Griffith/out-of-state developer storyline (and acting) is pretty weak... I admit it. Just fast forward through those parts, ha ha. Sonia Braga is amazing and the appearance of Freddie Fender as the major is a gem. Love the old guy.. his name escapes me right now but he steals the movie!.Score: 5/5
Captain JimTrue to his artistic style, Redford has taken this unique story of life in Northern New Mexico and given it life beyond the printed page. It is a lovely adaptation of John Nichols novel that should be enjoyed by more people than are likely to ever hear of it. When more and more commercial film is given over to the simple mind numbing mush of offerings, Redford continues to add an artistic accounting to his work..Score: 4/5
Fanciful adaptation of a brain candy novelThis film is a marvelous piece of storytelling. Redford has a gift for translating lyric stories of small town western life into gorgeous film, letting the landscape play a role as much as the actors do (also see A River Runs Through It). Let's hope he does a few more films like this one!.Score: 4/5

Suddenly, water begins flowing into it. Too bad it’s just a leak: the water belongs to the Divine Land Development Co., the conglomerate that’s tearing down most of Milagro to erect the biggest condo/golf course/recreation area in all of New Mexico. Joe’s tiny plot of inherited property is the only piece they don’t own—yet. The accidental irrigation polarizes the town—and the state government, which wants Joe stopped, but without any publicity that might focus attention on the shady development deal. They certainly don’t want Joe turned into a folk hero. So they send in boogeyman Montana (Walken), who masterminds a series of dirty tricks, which only aggravates the situation; as it escalates and everyone grows edgier, the shopkeeper does brisk business in bullets. It’ll take a big sacrifice to solve this, Coyote Angel (Carricart) advises. But what sacrifice is big enough? A road grader? A pig? The field? A neighbor’s life? “I know a lost cause when I see one,” reluctant activist Bloom (Heard) informs quixotic homegal Ruby (Braga). But “Milagro” is Spanish for “miracle,” and that’s exactly what the lethargic residents require. If the development deal proceeds, skyrocketing taxes will force the poverty-stricken local folk to sell out and move, spelling death for their quirky little community. Stubborn Joe’s got huevos, however—and his aged neighbor Amarante (Riquelme, in the film’s best performance), who walks between two worlds, has the spirit of Coyote Angel on their side. Picaresque, whimsical, brimming with truly magical magical realism, this amusing fable is filled with gorgeous photography, and there’s a twinkle in the eye of every frame. It provides both smiles and out-loud laughs in abundance, excellent ensemble acting, sweet insight into human nature and its foibles, and some delightfully cliché-breaking defusing of tense situations..Score: 5/5
