Kenneth Branagh ("Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "The Road to El Dorado") writes, directs and stars in this four-time Oscar-nominated classic Shakespeare saga about the melancholy Dane. With an all-star cast, including Oscar-nominee Kate Winslet ("Iris," "Titanic") and Oscar-winner Julie Christie ("Dragonheart," "Dr. Zhivago"), as well as appearances by Charlton Heston, John Gielgud, Jack Lemmon, Gerard Depardieu, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and many others. Branagh received an Oscar nomination for his outstanding screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter says "Branagh has boldly invigorated William Shakespeare's most celebrated play to a towering visual dimension that captures the tumultuous tragedy as no stage or filmic version has... Multiple Oscar nominations seem in order."

Bravo for Hamlet! This performance of Hamlet (full length) is inspiring. The very talented cast and production of the film are superb. Even as the picture runs about 4 hours, it is worth investing the time to watch. The acting and direction bring to life the complete story in a way the both satisfies newer audience members and pleases those who are familiar with and love Shakespeare..Score: 5/5

Finally, the Whole Thing Done Right!Branagh's Hamlet was easily the best film of 1996! The performances are absolutely spot on, especially Branagh, Derek Jacoby, Julie Christie and Kate Winslet, who all deserved awards! The adaptation is superb and finally COMPLETE! This film is an riveting, exciting and visceral interpretation that moves so quickly it seems much shorter than its four hour running time! As with Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing, Branagh has raised the bar for filmed Shakespeare. He is also wonderful in Othello (although he didn't direct), which I notice is also available here..Score: 5/5
Flawed but fun. This movie is sunk by some atrocious editing. It seems to be trying to emulate the MTV/Michael Bay-style quick cuts that were so popular in the 90s, but it just makes the whole affair seem cheesy. The acting and directing are stellar, of course, and as a whole it's the definitive adaptation of the play..Score: 4/5
I watched this film in my Literature class....And I absolutely loved it. I think that the fact that my professor put so much emphasis and passion into the film also influenced me and the class to fall a little more deeply in love with the character that Branagh so eloquently portrays. But the whole movie-- from the customs, the setting and the spectacular interpretation of Shakespeare's Hamlet-- was great and unforgettable. But, then again, Branagh has also made other spectacular movies, so the fact that this one is so great isn't so surprising..Score: 5/5

I love this versionSimply the most beautiful version of Hamlet. It may not be the best adaptation - the play is a long and digressive affair - but it is a dream to my completist heart. A classic brought to the screenThis film is a great tribute to the classic masterpiece. This 4 hour picture is the entire play of Hamlet with no edits, and it is well worth your time. Kenneth brings together a team of brilliant actors to create this epic story. It is by far my favorite Shakespeare film. Loved it!I'm a student, and in my English class we read and watched this version of Hamlet, also going to see Jude Law play him in the West End. I loved Kenneth's version. A problem with a lot of people playing Hamlet is that they don't have a wide enough emotional range to successfully portray the character, but that was not a problem here. Kate Winslet did a wonderful job as Ophelia, and I thought the character interpretation of Gertrude was perfect. While some of the choices made were a little liberal (like Hamlet had slept with Ophelia, for example), they were justified within the story and worked within the movie. Although I didn't like the grave digger in this version, Robin Williams was so hilarious as Osric that it didn't matter. Five stars!.Score: 5/5

Genius.Branagh is a genius. This is the most vibrant, sexy, awesome, grand and visually stunning adaptations of Hamlet I've ever seen. Kudos to Branagh for using the full text and more kudos for moving the time period up as well, allowing for more colour and all the pomp and circumstance the piece requires. The musical score is tangibly grand, the cast is amazing and gives deep, nuanced and explosive performances, especially Branagh himself. Horrible. This film is a mess.I mean, the film is kind of fun in a burlesque way, perhaps. As in, you could use it to play a drinking game (take a drink every time someone speaks in an urgent whisper). But it takes itself altogether far too seriously. The acting is dreadful, melodramatic, and worst of all, the funny bits are completely missed. Claudius, for example, is warm and sympathetic where he should be outrageous. Although I am sure this was nothing like Shakespeare's vision, I can't say he wouldn't like it. At least parts of it. After all, he wrote the script verbatim. But even Shakespeare himself cut mercilessly. I really think he would look at it as a missed opportunity. Or a whole series of missed opportunities. Everywhere this film could have been really cool, Branagh mucked it up with overbearing music, needless and distracting "action", and visually superfluous set pieces that repeat like a Flintstones cartoon.
