Academy Award® winner Peter Jackson continues his Middle-Earth saga that follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) who's swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. In the company of thirteen dwarves and the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo enters the Lonely Mountain in possession of Gollum's "precious" ring and his keen blade, Sting. With an all-star cast, including many acclaimed actors from The Lord of the Rings (such as Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis and more), and the effects wizardry of Jackson's award-winning Weta Workshop, Tolkien's epic story comes to life as never before imagined. The Extended Edition film is 25 minutes longer with new and extended scenes, not seen in the theatrical release.

The Dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf have successfully escaped the Misty Mountains, and Bilbo has gained the One Ring. They all continue their journey to get their gold back from the Dragon, Smaug.

Best of the Hobbit trilogy, especially the extended versionThe Hobbit was one book and at most should have maxed at two movies. Greed won out and instead of a pair of exciting movies that might have rivaled the Lord of the Rings trilogy in entertainment, we have the overuse of CGI, an over-extended, bloated, and at times painfully slow trilogy of movies that reached their height here, in the extended version..Lord HerrelScore: 5/5

Marred by moments of LOW “humor”; Correct Library Icons?“Biology-Affirming” does not quite translate as “Life-Affirming”. These stories, heavily steeped in warfare, thus cannot be woven or presented as featuring only sugar and stardust and unicorns; there will have to be some grit and fire here; however, I find that I most object to — within the three Hobbit Films (either Version), just as in many recent films elsewhere plagued by this hubris — such Very Low “humor” as is unnecessary, hence intrusive, but is nonetheless forced in (if it requireth a crowbar) for the sake of . . . how lovely . . . branding something as a Family Film For All! Live and let live; let some generally inane film appeal to its given audience; allow Tolkienesque films to breathe and glow steadily. The casting and acting for Gandalf, Bilbo, and Friends? Sublime. The treatment of Bilbo’s pity for Gollum is no less than celestial; such respect for kindness is crucial to Tolkien Books AND Films. That said, the ambitious expansion here (as from the 1937 novel and in either version of the films) was rather well done, it seems to me, if such a large expansion were to occur; there IS a LOT of battle, battle, battle (not quite Tolkien’s raison d’être); ultimately — conveying all the while a smaller story or “chapter” than did, after all, permit the very scope of the Lord of the Rings films — the Hobbit films reached reasonably well their equivalent of the more massive films’ massive quality . . . hence four stars for me. If anyone would like to see my (even) more extensive comments on the Hobbit films, please refer to the Reviews posted as for “An Unexpected Journey” in the Extended Edition; if someone might strongly prefer a Summary (if anything) as from me, then please see Reviews for “The Battle of the Five Armies” in the Extended Edition or for any Hobbit film in its Theatrical Version. So, so disappointing.I spent the whole movie wondering why this or that was happening because its not how the story goes. Jackson did sich a great jon on The Lord of The Rings but is very heavy handed and untrue to the story I love. It is LOOSELY based on The Hobbit. If you are a fan at all I would recommend skipping this. Major plot points and events are changed. I just could not get into it or suspend my disbelief because nothing seemed to coincide with the story that we all know..MlsebringScore: 1/5

AwesomeThis one is beyond compare. Everything about this movie is great-plot,acting,directing and effects. I have to admit if there was a dragon it had to be like Smaug.Any other dragons are like worms in front of Smaug.The most incredible creature that I've seen in any movie . Peter Jackson knows what he does. He knows how to bring creatures to live like they've been a part of our history. Who the Extended Edition is ForThe regular version is for the mainstream audience. The Extended Edition is for the people who love the books. This is because the 30 minutes or so of added scenes are almost entirely book scenes left out of the regular movie version. An example of this is the addition of some of the scenes from Mirkwood the was not in the regular movie. Because of this and the way the extended scenes fleshes out some seemingly cut short scenes, I highly reccomend getting the extended edition..DgleiberScore: 5/5

A deeper look at SmaugFor adding 25 minutes to the movie, I only really recognized one major change from the theatrical release. I never did notice the 25 minutes, but felt like I really was immersed deeper into the story. I loved returning to Laketown and the characters. Smaug was ever so terrible. Thorin’s fixation with the archenstone is even more evident. I haven’t gone through the 5 plus hours of extras, but I am looking forward to it. For the Lord of the Rings, the extended cut versions often really changed the story from the theatrical release versions. In fact, I can’t even watch the theatrical versions of the Lord of the Rings any more, the extended cut versions become the de facto storyline for me. I find for me, the extended cut versions of the Hobbit are just richer versions of the theatrical release. I cannot tell you whether that is better or not. All I can say is the I enjoyed both versions, but felt more satisfied with the extended cut version. It seems the pace of the story now flows the way it was intended to be. Either way, this is another great visit into Middle Earth. I enjoy Tolkien, but he is not an easy read. I cannot read Tolkien non-stop, the story becomes confusing to me then. But, I find if I read a page, or even sometimes just a paragraph and stop. The story becomes a rich and deep experience. The worst thing about Tolkien, and what makes him difficult to translate into a movie form is his endings. My first reading of the Hobbit, when I got to Smaug’s demise, I naturally thought that was the end of the book. Not even close. So far I feel Peter Jackson has done a wonderful job transferring Middle Earth to the screen, and making the characters not only come to life, but make sense.
