Cliche-riddenI'm finding it hard to stay interested in a show that covers all of the cliche bases. What could've been a great fantasy series is melted down to cheese deluxe. With teen hormones and angst at the forefront and dialogue you've seen and heard a million times in countless shows, it doesn't break new ground at all. The monsters all look like ones you've seen in movies and video games. Not even John Rhys-Davies can save it. Shape changer disguised as the king hugs his son and the cliche eye change during the hug, just to remind you that yes, he's a demon shape shifter and not the king--as if we didn't already know. The show treats us like we've never been to this rodeo before and I wish there was new ground broken, but it's pedestrian all the way. Maybe it's because I've read so many books in the 70's and 80's with the same basic story. For once I wish the formula would change. Flying demons that scream at the camera for no apparent reason. A boy who has powerful magic but doesn't know how to use it and can't figure out how to use the magic stones effectively (when we all know the stones have nothing to do with it, he doesn't need them). And of course, being a show in today's society, we can't leave out the homosexual themes. Ugh. I have to force myself to watch the rest of the season because I bought it..Score: 2/5

Better than the bookI am a fan of Terry Brook but in my opinion Elfstones was his second worst book. So it's easy to say Shannara Chronicles is better than the book. That being said it's a MTV production so expect a lot of young sex that will distract you from the story..Score: 4/5

The writing is even worse than the source materialOk, so, Brooks isn't know for being a brilliant writer... he all but plagiarized Tolkien outright in the novels, and his characters are cloying copies of the originals. The Elfstones book that MTV used for this series was at least best of the trilogy, but that doesn't say much. The tv series had potential in a campy fun way. A few good actors (mainly the older ones) helped drive things, and the special effects and costumes (especially demons) work great for tv. But the writing... the things they make these poor young actors say and do... I'm not sure how anyone could say some of those lines with a straight face... cheesy fantasy tv series or not, this is just bad writing... bad bad...not funny bad. Bad like a 6-year-old kid telling you about something exciting that happened at school: vague outlines of a story but lacking any substance or storytelling ability. Fail!.Score: 1/5

Just meh.It is not as horrible as The Seeker. But it is not great either. The visual aspect of the costumes and landscape is done really well. But the story ā¦ oh the story .. what an example of mediocrity and bad writing. The dialogue and acting come off as amateurish. Simply Wonderful!It has its āTV Momentsā: a bit of overacting, a bit of cheesy writing, a bit of unnecessary melodrama, but it is truly all of these things that give the show its charm! I was hooked from the first episode; all the things that could be wrong are belayed by a wonderfully engaging storyline that draws you in and makes you want to stick around! And the more you watch, the more the few cringeworthy things melt into things that endear the show to you! I simply cannot wait for more episodes! FREE!!Its FREE on MTV website people!!! DON'T PAY Good enough show. You'd think Fantasy means Imagination, but it is lacking in this interpretation. No "vortex" just a plastic door with smoke FX. 1000+ years old cars still on 4 wheels. Well, details are overlooked. As for the rest, there's a reason why its 14+ and not 18+. Nice fantasy but the acting...I have to admit I havenāt read the books, so I canāt say if itās true to the books, but I really enjoy the story line and the visuals. Although some of the acting and the scriptā¦ But it is an MTV production and Iām sure its intended audience loves every ācheeseball momentā. Love the clever cheeky rogue girl. Cringe whenever the princess opens her mouth. Not quite Game of Thrones, but a good filler in the meantime..Score: 3/5

Itās OK, despite itselfClumsy writing, inconsistent character behaviours and a performance spectrum that ranges from watery bland to overacting so spectacular that Jon Lovitz would be proud of it (āACTING!ā). And yee godsā¦ more demons that speak a silly made-up guttoral language, although only the head guy speaks in sentences. the rest just roar like four-year-olds playing at monster. Two saving graces: One is the excellence and originality of the narrative and plot lines. The second is that I learned how to fast-forward a video on iTunes so I could skip the stupid bits. I bought and watched the entire first season but Iām not planning that for season 2..Score: 3/5
