"The Aztecs"The Aztecs is overall a meh story. I see while people find it enjoyable, because it's a pure historical with the schoolteachers, and Barbara's knowledge of history really gets be showcased here. But putting in context to where it is in Season 1, it's a bit lacking. It's in between two superb 6 parters, "The Keys of Marinus" and "The Sensorities". It almost seems like it was originally written to be next to Marco Polo, (either before or probably right after), but was pushed back because the show didn't think it should showcase two pure historical stores in a row without severely losing viewers. (This was only Season 1 before the show became the juggernaut it is today)..Score: 3/5
Fond memoriesThe Aztecs episodes are the sixth series of the William Hartnell Dr Who. There are a total of 27 series with Hartnell sadly some have been lost or are incomplete. The AztecsYes, this was "The First Doctor" and we get to meet his granddaugher Susan and her two teachers Ian and Barbara. In this episode you'll learn something about Barbara---she has a tendency to think she knows more than anyone else. A tendency we'll see repeated in companions to follow. Of course, Barbara has an excuse most of the others will not have. The Doctor's age is unknown at this time, Time Lords are unheard of, regeneration is unknown---all these will come later. (Regeneration will be introduced when William Hartnell leaves the series at the conclusion of the serial "The Tenth Planet"---most of which no longer exists so read the novel) and the Time Lords are introduced when Patrick Troughton *The Second Doctor) leaves the series in WAR GAMES (all of which is still intact). By the time "The Aztecs" aired the Daleks had already been introduced. They came with the second serial which was later made into a movie starring Peter Cushing as the Doctor. The story of the Daleks origin is very different before Tom Baker. Just to warn you. No Davros or any of that..Score: 4/5
Wonderfully DoneAn excellent episode from one of Doctor Who's very best Doctors. "The Aztecs" delves into the culture of the Aztecs and their society while exploring one of the founding principles of the series: History is forever static. Although Hartnell does as excellently as always, particular attention is payed to his companions in this serial, and they manage to flesh out the story brilliantly. Here's hoping that more of the original Doctors episodes, such as those introducing the Daleks, are brought to the iTunes store before long..Score: 5/5

The AztecsBefore there was Rose. Before there was Ace. Before Sarah Jane Smith, there was Barbara Wright, the school teacher from Coal Hill School who was a very feminist like character in the days before feminism caught on in the commercial market. She was an outspoken, strong female lead who drew the respect of even William Hartnell's Doctor. But in this serial from the first series in 1964, Barbara took a broader lead in the series than most future companions could ever hope for. Landing in a tomb in the Aztec capital, Barbara, whose character is extremely knowledgable on Aztec culture and history, is unwittingly taken for the person for whom the tomb is built as a reincarnation. When Ian, Susan and The Doctor stumble out they are believed to be her servents. Unfortunately what comes out of the tomb cannot get back in and for the next 3 episodes, the TARDIS crew and Barbara in particular match wits with the priest of sacrifice who wishes to carry on a time honoured practise of sacrificing people to the Sun God. The Serial was the second "historical", following upon Marco Polo and a common aspect of the series up until 1966 with the Highlander. As part of its original direction, Series creator Sydney Newman had wished for Doctor Who to steer clear of bug eyed monsters and be developed as a sort of educational program. Therefore the Aztecs buzzes with numerous anectdotes and historical facts. Barry Newberry's beautiful sets mirrored the world of the Aztecs beautifully as well as the costumes. The Aztecs along with The Romans and The Crusade in 1965 were among the best of this brand of serial. Unfortunately for Sydney Newman, The Daleks were already morphing the Series in the direction of bug-eyed critters simply by becoming as popular in Britain as the Beatles. This serial was also unconventional by developing a love interest for the Doctor. Long before River Song, Rose and Martha Jones, Cameca the Aztec maiden stole the Doctor's heart. He even married her in the most comical way allowing the serials audience to learn about the value of cocoa beans in Aztec society. The Aztecs was a well told historical. Its side plots with Susan grounded in an Aztec seminary and Ian facing off against the warrior icxta add to the growing tensions between Barbara, her "servents" and the Aztecs who begin repudiating them as gods returned. Each cliffhanger worked surprisingly well and the overall look was stunning especially once one factored in the budget that the serial was made on. The Aztecs was wonderful stuff and shall be remembered as being on the the most important in Doctor Who history..Score: 5/5
Aztec AttractionOne of the 1st Doctors adventures... Landing in a Temple in Ancient Mexico, the crew are cut off from the TARDIS, when a one way door closes, trapping them. Barbara is mistaken by the Aztecs as a reincarnated Priest! Realising that the Spanish will be arriving in the next few years, she tries to 'civilize' them by trying to abolish the culture of human sacrifice; ignoring the Doctor's warning's about interfering in history. However, her attempts make her an enemy to Tloxtol, the Priest of Sacrifice, who decides to use Susan in his plots to break her power, and tricks Ian into a fight to the death! In the meantime, the Doctor has to find a way back into the TARDIS, before they all end up sacrificed... This is a good story, with excellent costumes, and decent scenery. The plot is well written, and shows the futility of trying to change the future. Obviously, as this story is from the 1st Doctor's tenure, it is in black and white, but I don't believe that this detracts from the viewing experience. William Hartnell shows his excellent acting skills, especially when he is trying to persuade Barbara about the futility of interfering; first by being frustrated with her lack of understanding, but also by becoming oddly sympathetic. Well worth the price, and should be enjoyed by viewers of all ages..Score: 5/5
